In my family, our circle had always been a space where family members come together to share stories, laughter, and love. We created a space where we can be ourselves, express our emotions, and receive support from our loved ones. The circle reminds us that we are not alone in this world and that our family will always be there for us, no matter what. The tree families, gently swaying with their branches intertangled had hundreds of years of practice. They encircled the scorched remains of their ancestors, both protector and protected.

2018- Year of the Flinch
“The flinch phrase and the nudge to be brave in the face of perceived danger really stuck with me as a way to approach my work and at times, how to approach life.”
Dedication to My Neck, and the Joy of Holding It High
The Museum portion of the trip situates the experiences of slavery, civil rights abuses, and mass incarceration as central to “American” identity. Let Me Try!
“Let me try!” These three words are always music to my ears. As a former kindergarten teacher and museum educator, these three words mark the lesson transition from modeling to independent practice. These words demonstrate confidence and connection. “Let me try,” means I am learning, participating, and owning my experience. I love the light that emits…
